This depends a lot on whether or not the woman has become a mother for the first time, and whether she has ever taken care of any newborn before. I believe that in modern society, most women who are becoming mothers for the first time do not know much about newborn babies.

There are many fundamental differences between the newborn and an adult.
  • A newborn sleeps up to 20 hours a day. The mother and the infant should be ensured a safe, clean, and quiet place for adequate rest. The use of mosquito nets to prevent bites is preferable.
  • The newborn should never be made to sleep on the stomach.
  • The newborn can not support the neck so it will always need support.
  • The normal activities of life such as hunger, urination, and motions, etc. move at a much faster rate in a newborn. No matter how many nappies you keep they will fall short.
  • Weight gain and increase in length indicate the good health of the newborn.
  • Mother's touch, breast milk, and her love and affection are extremely beneficial for the baby.
  • Be sure to breastfeed the baby every two and a half hours otherwise the baby may be at risk of glucose deficiency (hypoglycemia)
  • Baby should be adequately burped immediately after breastfeeding to avoid gas or pain in the stomach.
  • Newborn babies often suffer from jaundice in their early days and you should seek medical counseling for it.
  • In the early days, special care should be taken according to the instructions of the pediatrician to clean the baby's umbilical cord.
  • The infant should regularly be vaccinated and should be on exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.
  • If the infant is not crying or taking milk, then he/she may have a problem, for which medical consultation should be taken.
