There are many fundamental differences between the newborn and an adult.
- A newborn sleeps up to 20 hours a day. The mother and the infant should be ensured a safe, clean, and quiet place for adequate rest. The use of mosquito nets to prevent bites is preferable.
- The newborn should never be made to sleep on the stomach.
- The newborn can not support the neck so it will always need support.
- The normal activities of life such as hunger, urination, and motions, etc. move at a much faster rate in a newborn. No matter how many nappies you keep they will fall short.
- Weight gain and increase in length indicate the good health of the newborn.
- Mother's touch, breast milk, and her love and affection are extremely beneficial for the baby.
- Be sure to breastfeed the baby every two and a half hours otherwise the baby may be at risk of glucose deficiency (hypoglycemia)
- Baby should be adequately burped immediately after breastfeeding to avoid gas or pain in the stomach.
- Newborn babies often suffer from jaundice in their early days and you should seek medical counseling for it.
- In the early days, special care should be taken according to the instructions of the pediatrician to clean the baby's umbilical cord.
- The infant should regularly be vaccinated and should be on exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.
- If the infant is not crying or taking milk, then he/she may have a problem, for which medical consultation should be taken.
